
These objects were developed for the installation Class, and respond to a text identifying two principals of law by which a given person might be granted right of residence in a country or state: the law according to soil (or where the person was born); and the law according to blood (geneology, or parentage).* The rulers inscribed "...according to soil" are used as projections which form a physical barrier in the installation Class (1993 version). Those inscribed "...according to blood" are used in a video sequence showing a male figure measuring himself in echo of a school or armed forces fitness examination.
